Seeding West Jordan, East to West

Hydroseeding in West Jordan covers two very different halves of town. The city limits start on the western bank of the Jordan River, where the ground is low and settled, and run west to neighborhoods like Welby, Copper Hills and Jordan Hills on the lower slopes of the eastern Oquirrh Mountains. A lawn on a level lot near the river and a lawn on a sloped lot below the Oquirrhs are not the same job.

The fast-growing west

West Jordan grew from 4,221 people in 1970 to 116,961 in 2020, and the fastest development has been between 4800 West and State Route 111. Much of that land is still being built out. When a subdivision phase is graded and left open, wind and summer storms move fine soil into gutters and storm drains. Temporary hydroseeding and silt fence keep that soil on site until houses and landscaping go in.

Sloped lots near the mountains

On the Oquirrh side, many backyards tilt toward the house next door or toward the street. We shape the grade first so runoff follows a swale instead of cutting across the lawn, then spray a heavier hydromulch on the steeper spots. For banks too steep to mow comfortably, a native or low-water mix is often the better long-term cover.

Mining in the foothills

The Kennecott Copper Mine, described as the world's largest man-made excavation, sits in the western foothills of the city. That is a reminder that the ground west of town has been worked hard for a long time. On new lots we check what the builder left as topsoil and bring in more when the surface is mostly subgrade.

East-side neighborhoods

Closer to the river and the old Gardner Village area, homes are older and lawns are tired. Here we do more lawn repair and overseeding than full installs, plus grading where settled yards now drain toward foundations.

West Jordan Questions

My new West Jordan backyard slopes toward the neighbor. What do you do first?

We regrade so water follows a swale or a side yard path, then seed. Seeding a bad grade only hides the problem until the next storm.

Do you hydroseed open subdivision phases for builders?

Yes. Temporary seeding and silt fence keep soil from blowing or washing off graded land that will sit before homes are built.

Is a native mix a good idea on my steep bank?

Often. Steep banks are hard to mow and water evenly, and a low-water native mix can hold the soil with less upkeep.

Can you thicken an older lawn near the river instead of replacing it?

If the grade is sound, overseeding with hydroseed is usually enough to fill thin areas.
