Kearns Yards and Their Unusual Past

Hydroseeding in Kearns means seeding on ground with an unusual history. Before 1942 this was dry farmland. Then the Army built Kearns Army Air Base, later Camp Kearns, with several hundred buildings, many on concrete foundations. After the base closed in 1946, developers used its roads and infrastructure, and the old streets and foundations became the template for the town. Some yards still hide remnants of that era.

What turns up during grading

When we regrade older Kearns yards, we watch for buried concrete, gravel bases and compacted strips that do not drain. Those spots grow poor grass no matter how much seed goes on. Removing or breaking up the obstruction, then adding topsoil, gives the new lawn a fair chance.

Lakebed soil

All of Kearns sits on the Provo-stage lakebed of Lake Bonneville, at about 4,530 feet on the west bench. Lake sediments can be fine and tight. We loosen and amend before seeding and keep the hydromulch rate high enough to hold moisture in the dry months.

The Kearns-Bennion hill

A natural rise about 100 feet tall runs northwest from the Jordan River toward the Oquirrh Mountains. Yards on its slopes drain downhill across neighbors' lots. Good grading and a well-anchored seedbed help keep that runoff from carrying soil.

Newer building

The last major housing area was built between 5600 West and 6200 South, and more homes went up around Oquirrh Park in 2019 and 2020. Kearns became a city in May 2024. For construction permits, Salt Lake County lists the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District as the contact for Kearns, and projects disturbing an acre or more need a state stormwater permit and plan.

Kearns Questions

Why won't grass grow in one strip of my Kearns yard?

Buried concrete or a compacted gravel base is a common cause here. We dig to check, remove what we can and add topsoil before reseeding.

Is Kearns soil good for lawns?

It can be, with prep. Lakebed soil tends to be tight, so loosening and amending it helps a lot.

Who handles construction permits in Kearns?

Salt Lake County lists the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District as the construction contact for Kearns.

Can you seed a backyard on the slope of the hill?

Yes. We grade to guide runoff and use a well-anchored mulch so seed stays put.
