Two Kinds of Ground in Sandy

Sandy hydroseeding jobs split between the mountain side and the valley side. The eastern residential area climbs the slopes of the Wasatch Range, while the western section sits on the valley bottom, with the Jordan River along part of the western border. The original townsite was a square mile on an alluvial terrace that parallels the mountains. Ground laid down by mountain streams can vary from fine silt to gravel within one lot, which affects how often a new lawn needs water.

Mixed soil, dry June

Sandy averages about 15.74 inches of precipitation a year, with April the wettest month at 1.82 inches and June and July down near 0.85 and 0.95 inches. Gravelly patches plus a dry early summer means new seed can dry out in an afternoon. We add hydromulch at a rate that holds moisture and, where the soil is mostly gravel, spread topsoil before seeding so roots have something to grab.

Living next to Dimple Dell

Dimple Dell Regional Park covers 630 acres of natural area running east to west through Sandy's neighborhoods, with more than 15 miles of trails. Homes on its rim back onto open, sloped land. When those yards are regraded or a retaining wall goes in, the disturbed slope needs cover quickly so soil does not slide into the park. Erosion control blankets and a native seed mix along the edge blend into the open space better than turf.

Smelter town history

Sandy's first decades were shaped by mining. Silver from Little Cottonwood Canyon made it a supply stop, and the Flagstaff, Mingo and Saturn smelters operated here. On older parcels near the historic center we stay alert to old fill and debris when digging for grading or drainage.

Redevelopment

The Cairns is a 1,100-acre city center redevelopment between 9000 South and 11400 South. Commercial sites there need sediment control, inlet protection and final stabilization, and we handle all three.

Sandy Questions

My Sandy yard is mostly gravel. Can hydroseed grow on it?

Not well on its own. We spread topsoil first, then hydroseed, so the new grass has soil to root into and hold water.

What should go on a slope that backs onto Dimple Dell?

Erosion control blankets with a native mix work well there. They hold soil and look closer to the open space than a mowed lawn.

How often will I water a new lawn in Sandy?

On fast-draining ground, short cycles several times daily through roughly the first two weeks, then tapering as roots deepen.

Do you work on commercial sites around the Cairns?

Yes. We provide sediment control, inlet protection and final hydroseeding for commercial and redevelopment projects.
