Flat, Wet Ground in South Salt Lake

Hydroseeding in South Salt Lake deals with the opposite of the foothill problem. The city is mostly flat, sitting next to the Jordan River and far from the mountains, and it has a fairly high water table. Some areas were somewhat swampy before development in the early 1900s. Water does not run off here so much as sit, and new grass can drown in low spots.

Grading flat lots

On flat ground even small dips collect water. We fine grade so the yard has a slight, steady fall away from the house toward the street or a drain, and fill low spots with topsoil before seeding. Where water sits after every storm, our grading crew can trench for drainage.

Mill Creek

Mill Creek once marked the southern edge of the original town, and three of its tributaries come together in Fitts Park. The creek joins the Jordan River in South Salt Lake. Projects near those channels need silt fence and inlet protection, and county rules require a stormwater permit for disturbance of any size within 50 feet of regulated surface waters.

Redevelopment

Ground broke in 2017 on The Crossing, between State Street and Main Street just south of 2100 South, with plans for 2,500 housing units, retail, office space and new greenspace and trails. Projects like that need erosion and sediment control during construction and seeded open areas at the end. We handle both, including seeding of detention areas.

Small yards

Many South Salt Lake homes have compact yards. With a high water table, overwatering is easy. We set up seeding with a moisture-holding mulch and advise lighter, more frequent watering instead of long soaks.

South Salt Lake Questions

Water sits on my South Salt Lake lawn after rain. Can seeding help?

Not alone. We regrade low spots and can trench for drainage, then seed.

Do I need a permit to grade near Mill Creek?

County rules require a stormwater permit for disturbance within 50 feet of regulated waters. We plan silt fence for those jobs.

How should I water new seed with a high water table?

Light, frequent cycles rather than long soaks, so the surface stays moist without waterlogging.

Do you seed open areas on mixed-use projects?

Yes, including greenspace, swales and detention areas.
