Seeding the South End of the Valley

Hydroseeding in Bluffdale means working on some of the most open ground left in Salt Lake County. The city sits at about 4,436 feet on the old Lake Bonneville bed, with shorelines visible on the benches and wide views of the Wasatch and Oquirrh ranges. Its population more than doubled between 2010 and 2020, from 7,598 to 17,014, so a lot of the land we see is freshly cut for homes.

The Jordan Narrows

Seven irrigation canals that serve the Salt Lake Valley start at the Jordan Narrows in the Bluffdale area. The river drops fastest there, about 27 feet per mile, compared with 2 to 4 feet per mile over most of its length. Lots near the river and the canals often have banks, berms and ditch edges that need more than seed to stay in place. We use straw erosion control blankets on those edges and keep sediment out of the ditches with silt fence or wattles during grading.

April and May do the heavy lifting

Bluffdale's precipitation peaks at about 1.8 inches in April and May and falls to about 0.9 inches in June, while July highs average in the mid 90s. That makes a late April or May seeding the easiest path for a new lawn, with fall as the second choice. A June or July job is still possible if you can run several short waterings daily through the early weeks.

Larger lots, mixed cover

The city describes itself by its wide open spaces, and on a big lot not every square foot needs turf. We often seed a lawn near the house and a native or pasture mix farther out, which keeps dust down and holds soil without the water bill of a full lawn.

Parks show what grows here

The city counts 13 parks, from the 40-acre Wardle Fields Regional Park to 22-acre Bluffdale City Main Park and newer ones like Vintage Park. Those big irrigated fields prove that turf does well here when the soil is prepared and the water is steady.

Bluffdale Questions

When is the easiest time to hydroseed a Bluffdale lawn?

Late April through May, when precipitation peaks. Early fall is the next best window.

My property backs onto a canal. Can you seed the bank?

We can stabilize the slope on your side with blankets and seed, but anything inside a canal easement needs the canal company's say first.

Do I have to plant lawn on all of my acreage?

No. Many owners seed turf near the house and a native or pasture mix on the rest to control dust and erosion.

Can you grade a pad for a barn or arena?

Yes. Our grading crew handles pads, swales and drainage trenching, and we seed the disturbed edges afterward.
