Farmington From Hills to Wetlands

Hydroseeding in Farmington covers ground that runs from the Wasatch foothills on the east to wetlands along the Great Salt Lake on the west. The town's own trail system, about 146 miles maintained by a city committee, follows that same line from the hills to the wetlands. Each end of town calls for a different approach: anchored mulch on the slopes, careful sediment control near the wet ground.

Lake-effect snow and evening breezes

Lake-enhanced snow falls often in winter, and cool downslope breezes come off the mountains on most summer evenings. Annual precipitation is about 22.25 inches, with May the wettest month at 2.65 inches and July and August under an inch. Spring is the easiest time to establish a lawn here, and the late-spring moisture gives seed a strong start.

A growing city

Farmington grew from 12,081 people in 2000 to 24,531 in 2020. Station Park, a transit-oriented retail center with a FrontRunner station, anchors newer commercial development. New subdivisions and commercial pads mean graded land that needs silt fence while it is open and seed when it is finished.

Toward the wetlands

Lots on the west side sit closer to the lake and its wet ground. Sediment from a construction site travels easily across flat land into ditches that drain west. Fence and inlet filters go in on day one, we keep track-out off the street, and exposed areas get seeded promptly.

A farming name

The Haight family settled here in 1847 and set up a farm and an inn, and by the early 1860s the town stretched six miles between Centerville and Kaysville. Older lots on former farm ground may have good topsoil worth keeping; we check before grading.

Farmington Questions

Is spring the best time to hydroseed in Farmington?

Usually. May is the wettest month, which helps a new lawn get established before July.

My lot is on the west side near the wetlands. What should I watch?

Sediment control. Flat ground drains toward ditches and wet areas, so we put up silt fence before grading.

Do evening canyon breezes affect new seed?

They can dry the surface. A good hydromulch layer keeps the seed moist.

Do you work on commercial pads near Station Park?

Yes, including erosion control during construction and final seeding.
