Midvale's Rebuilt West Side
Hydroseeding in Midvale often means putting grass on land that was once unusable. Bingham Junction, about 446 acres on the city's western border, was a mining slag site from 1871 until 1958, and testing found large amounts of lead, arsenic and heavy metals. After an EPA-assisted cleanup it came off the National Priorities List in 2006 and now hosts dozens of businesses. South of it, the roughly 351-acre Jordan Bluffs area is proposed for about 3,500 more housing units.
Working on reclaimed ground
On reclaimed sites, the soil cover is part of the cleanup design, so digging and grading follow the site's rules. Our role is usually the surface: hydroseeding or hydromulching the final cover, keeping slopes and swales from eroding, and maintaining silt fence and inlet protection while buildings go up. We work from the project's approved plans and do not disturb the cover beyond what they allow.
The river border
The Jordan River forms Midvale's western boundary as it runs down the center of the valley. The river has a long record of pollution from sewage, farm runoff and mining waste; in 1962 Midvale measured coliform levels far above the state limit. Today, keeping sediment out of the river is the point of most construction stormwater rules. Projects that touch ground within 50 feet of regulated waters need a county stormwater permit no matter the size.
Small yards, dry summers
Midvale is compact, about 5.92 square miles, with an annual precipitation average near 14.7 inches. July is the driest month at about 0.7 inches. Small city yards dry out fast between waterings, so we lean on a moisture-holding hydromulch and spring or fall timing.
Growth pressure
The population jumped 28.8 percent from 2010 to 2020, to 36,028. Much of that came as apartments and townhomes, which bring common-area lawns and detention basins that need seeding and erosion control.

Midvale Questions
Can you hydroseed on the reclaimed land at Bingham Junction or Jordan Bluffs?
We seed and mulch the surface according to each project's approved plans. Any digging into the cover follows the site's own rules.
Do Midvale townhome projects need erosion control?
Most sites that disturb an acre or more, plus jobs close to the Jordan River, need a stormwater plan with silt fence and inlet protection.
Can you seed a detention basin?
Yes. Basins and swales get a seed mix that tolerates periodic standing water, with mulch or blankets on the side slopes.
My small yard dries out fast. Will hydroseed survive?
With a moisture-holding mulch and a spring or fall start, small yards do fine. Watering in short cycles helps.
