Taylorsville Starts With the Soil
Hydroseeding in Taylorsville lives or dies on soil prep. Lake Bonneville laid down clay and sand across this part of the valley, and as the lake dried over the past 14,000 years, salts stayed behind and left the soil alkaline. Like most desert soils, it has little organic matter and is hard to work. A hydroseed lawn sprayed straight onto that ground can sprout and then stall.
Fixing the base
Our usual approach here is to loosen the top several inches, mix in compost or quality topsoil, and fine grade before seeding. On heavy clay patches we avoid working the soil wet, which makes it seal into a crust. The goal is a seedbed that drinks water instead of shedding it down the driveway.
Bennion Hill
Bennion Hill is a broad east-west ridge rising perhaps 150 feet above the land around it, the east end of a longer ridge running toward Farnsworth Peak. Homes on its slopes deal with runoff that crosses yards on its way downhill. On those lots we grade gentle swales and seed with a mulch that grips the surface, adding blankets where the slope is steep.
Canal country
The Jordan River was the only natural water source for early settlers on this dry sagebrush land. The North Jordan Canal, the South Jordan Canal and the 1881 Utah and Salt Lake Canal carried river water above the western bluffs, and corn, wheat, alfalfa and later sugar beets followed. Farmland was sold to developers starting in the early 1970s. Old field soil can still turn up under yards, and it is usually better than the subsoil around it.
Built-out neighborhoods
Taylorsville incorporated in 1996 and is now largely built out, with about 60,448 residents. Most of our work here is lawn renovation, regrading settled yards and seeding after sprinkler or drainage repairs.

Taylorsville Questions
Why does grass struggle in my Taylorsville yard?
The native soil is alkaline and low in organic matter. Adding compost or topsoil before seeding usually fixes most of the problem.
Can you hydroseed clay without adding topsoil?
Sometimes, but results are better if we loosen and amend it first. Bare clay tends to crust and shed water.
Water runs off the hill across my lawn. What helps?
A shallow swale to guide the water, plus a mulch or blanket that holds the seedbed while grass roots.
Do you reseed after sprinkler repairs?
Yes. We level the trench lines and hydroseed the strips so they blend in.
