Draper Slopes, Storms and Seed
Hydroseeding in Draper usually involves a slope. The Wasatch Range forms the city's eastern boundary and Traverse Ridge sits to the south, so many homes are built on benches and hillsides above the valley floor at around 4,751 feet. Draper stayed a small farming town until the late 1990s, when growth took off, and a lot of that newer housing went uphill.
Monsoon storms in July and August
Draper's springs are usually mild and wet, but monsoon moisture brings afternoon thunderstorms in July and August, and the city sees more temperature extremes than other valley suburbs. A short, heavy cell on a freshly graded hillside can move a lot of soil. On slopes we prefer bonded fiber matrix or a tackified hydromulch, which grips the surface better than straw scattered by hand, and we install erosion control blankets on the steepest faces.
What Draper expects on job sites
The city's stormwater booklet spells out the basics for builders. Sites disturbing an acre or more need a state permit and a written stormwater pollution prevention plan in place ahead of any digging. Silt fence posts go 6 feet apart on the contour, with no more than half an acre of drainage per 100 feet of fence, and sediment comes out when it reaches half the fence height. Exposed areas left more than 60 days should be seeded or mulched, and reseeding continues until coverage reaches 75 percent. We set up silt fence, inlet protection and seeding to match those rules.
From egg farms to subdivisions
In the 1940s Draper was called the Egg Basket of Utah, and the Washburn Poultry Farm kept more than 10,000 chickens in the 1950s. Old farm parcels on the valley side of town can have rich, manure-built topsoil under a layer of fill. When we find it during grading, we keep it.
Point of the Mountain
The Utah State Prison operated near Point of the Mountain from 1951 to 2022, an area also known for strong winds that draw hang gliders and paragliders. Wind dries a new seedbed fast. On exposed lots in that part of town we raise the mulch rate so the seed stays covered and moist.

Draper Terrain and Rules
- Mountain edges. The Wasatch Range forms Draper's eastern boundary and Traverse Ridge lies to the south of the city.
- Summer storms. Monsoonal moisture brings afternoon thunderstorms in July and August, and Draper has more temperature extremes than other suburbs.
- Silt fence standard. Draper's BMP booklet sets silt fence posts 6 feet apart on contour, with a 0.5 acre drainage limit per 100 feet of fence.
- Seeding target. The booklet calls for reseeding until 75 percent coverage, and seeding or mulch on areas open more than 60 days.

Draper Questions
What does Draper require for silt fence on a building lot?
The city BMP booklet calls for posts 6 feet apart along the contour, sediment removal at half the fence height and inspection after rain. We install to that standard.
Will a summer thunderstorm wash out new seed on my Draper hillside?
It can on bare ground. A tackified hydromulch or bonded fiber matrix, plus blankets on steep spots, holds up far better.
How long can graded ground sit before it must be covered?
Draper's booklet says areas exposed more than 60 days should be seeded or mulched.
Do you seed wildflowers on upper slopes?
Yes. A native and wildflower mix is a good fit for hillside areas that will not be irrigated like a lawn.
Is wind a problem near Point of the Mountain?
It can dry seed quickly, so we use a heavier mulch layer on exposed lots there.
