From Alfalfa Fields to New Neighborhoods

South Jordan hydroseeding work runs across a city that climbs from about 4,300 feet near the Jordan River in the east to roughly 5,200 feet at the Oquirrh foothills. Most of that ground is fairly flat because it is built on lake sediment left by Lake Bonneville. Flat is good for a lawn, but it also means water does not always leave on its own, so yard grading gets as much attention as the seed.

Daybreak and the west side

Kennecott Land's Daybreak community began in 2004 on 4,200 acres and was planned for more than 20,000 homes across the western half of the city. The last 1,300 undeveloped acres were sold in 2022, so new construction will continue for years. For builders that means temporary seeding and silt fence on open phases; for new owners it means turning a graded lot into a lawn before the first summer.

Canal water for your lawn

Secondary water for landscaping in South Jordan comes from the canals, while drinking water comes from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. The South Jordan Canal was finished in 1876 to lift Jordan River water above the river bluffs, and the Utah and Salt Lake Canal, finished in 1881, runs along the west side of Redwood Road. Before we seed, we ask what your secondary system delivers and when, because the watering plan for a hydroseed lawn depends on it.

River bluff lots

The Beckstead Ditch, about 2.5 miles long, runs along the base of the west bluff and still irrigates city parks and a golf course. Homes along the bluff edge have slopes facing the river. On those faces we use hydromulch or a straw blanket rather than bare seed, so sprinkler runoff and storms do not carry soil downhill.

Old farm ground

South Jordan grew alfalfa from the late 1890s and sugar beets from about 1910. Some infill lots still have old field soil under the fill. We test-dig before grading to see whether the topsoil is worth keeping.

What South Jordan owners ask us for

  • Hydroseed lawn installation on new Daybreak and infill lots
  • Grading and topsoil to fix flat yards that hold water
  • Erosion control on bluff-side slopes
  • Overseeding older lawns in east-side neighborhoods

South Jordan Questions

Can I water a new hydroseed lawn with secondary water in South Jordan?

Usually yes, since landscape water here comes from the canals. We plan seeding around your delivery schedule so the seed does not dry out between turns.

My Daybreak yard stays soggy after rain. Will seeding fix it?

No, the grade has to be fixed first. On flat lake-sediment ground we reshape the yard so water moves away before we spray.

Do you seed slopes that drop toward the Jordan River?

Yes. On bluff faces we add hydromulch or straw erosion control blankets so the soil holds while the grass roots in.

Do builders in South Jordan need silt fence on open phases?

Large disturbed areas generally need sediment control. We put up silt fence, guard the drain inlets, and seed any ground that will sit open.
