Seeding in the Tooele Valley

Hydroseeding in Tooele means working at a higher, snowier spot than most of the Salt Lake Valley. The city sits at about 4,915 feet on the west side of the Oquirrh Mountains, averages about 18.44 inches of precipitation a year and sees about 75.3 inches of snow. That snowpack is a real asset for a fall-seeded lawn: seed laid down in September can root, sit under snow and come up strong in spring.

Spring melt, then dry

April and May each average about 2.35 inches of precipitation, while July and August drop to 0.80 and 0.68 inches. July highs average above 91 degrees. That gives two good seeding windows, spring and early fall, and one hard one in midsummer. Slopes that get melt runoff in spring need a mulch or blanket that will not slide when the ground is saturated.

Water rights for new construction

All new construction in Tooele County must have adequate water rights, and inside incorporated areas those rights are turned over to the local government. That matters for lawn size. Before we quote a big lawn on a new lot, we suggest you confirm how much irrigation water the home has, and we can plan a smaller turf area with native seeding around it if water is tight.

Old industry, new uses

The International Smelting and Refining Company smelter ran from 1910 until its last lead processing in 1972 and was torn down in 1972 to 1974. During World War II the government took 25,000 acres for an ordnance depot, and about 1,700 acres were annexed to the city in 1993; that area now holds manufacturing and warehouses. Commercial projects on that land need sediment control and final stabilization.

Growing town

Tooele grew from 22,502 people in 2000 to 35,742 in 2020. New homes mean new yards, and many start as bare builder-grade dirt that needs topsoil and grading before seeding.

Tooele Questions

Can I seed a lawn in Tooele in the fall?

Yes. September seeding lets the grass root before snow, and the snowpack keeps moisture in through winter.

How big should my lawn be if water is limited?

Check your home's water rights first. We can seed a smaller lawn near the house and a native mix on the rest.

Do you do erosion control on depot-area commercial sites?

Yes. Fencing and inlet filters stay in place while the build is underway, and open areas get hydroseeded at the end.

Will spring melt wash out seed on my slope?

It can on bare ground. A tackified hydromulch or an erosion control blanket holds better on saturated slopes.
