Magna Between Mountain and Lake

Hydroseeding in Magna happens in a corner of the valley that sees runoff from the Oquirrh Mountains and drains toward the Great Salt Lake. The town sits at about 4,265 feet, just northeast of the Oquirrhs and directly south of the lake. Early settlers built at the base of the northern Oquirrhs, and foothill ground still borders the town to the south and west.

Coon Creek

Coon Creek drains Coon Canyon, one of the major Oquirrh drainages, and flows north and west through Magna to the Great Salt Lake. Grading near a drainage like that needs sediment control. Salt Lake County requires a construction stormwater permit for disturbance of any size within 50 feet of regulated surface waters. We install silt fence and wattles on the downhill side before work starts and stabilize slopes with hydromulch or blankets afterward.

From farms to mills

Magna was farmland until copper changed it. Utah Copper Company started the Magna Mill in 1906, Boston Consolidated added a second mill in 1909, and the two merged in 1911. Much of the land around town has been graded, piled and reshaped by industry for a century. On older lots we check for fill and add clean topsoil where the existing surface is not suitable for a lawn.

West Bench growth

The 2020 earthquake

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake centered in Magna struck on March 18, 2020, followed by more than 850 aftershocks. Damage was light, but some homeowners have since done foundation and wall repairs that tore up yards. We regrade and reseed after that kind of work.
