Riverton Lawns on Old Farm Ground
Riverton hydroseeding often happens on land that grew crops within living memory. Farming was the town's economic base, with alfalfa, wheat, sugar beets, tomatoes, poultry, sheep and dairy. Land prices climbed in the 1960s and 1970s and subdivisions spread, and a 1996 annexation roughly doubled the city, pushing it west toward 4800 West and 5600 West. Many of the yards we seed sit on that converted field ground.
What old fields mean for a new lawn
Former farm soil can be a gift or a headache. Some lots keep decent topsoil from years of plowing and manure. Others had that topsoil stripped during subdivision grading and were left with packed subsoil. Before we spray, we dig a few test spots, look at the color and structure, and decide whether to amend, add topsoil or simply loosen and seed.
Water reached the bench late
Early growth here was slow because irrigation water was scarce. Three canals were later built to carry Jordan River water up onto the benchland. That history still matters: many Riverton yards rely on secondary water, and a new hydroseed lawn needs steady moisture for its first few weeks. We set the seeding date with your water schedule in mind.
Rain and heat
Riverton averages about 15.76 inches of precipitation a year, with winter snow and summer highs that sometimes break 100 degrees. That is not much rain for a new lawn. Spring and early fall seedings get help from cooler weather; midsummer jobs need more mulch and closer watering.
Fixing grade on older subdivisions
Homes from the 1970s and 1980s expansion now have settled yards, sunken trench lines from utility work and low spots by patios. We regrade, add topsoil where it settled and hydroseed the repaired areas so the new grass blends with the old.

Riverton Questions
My Riverton lot used to be a field. Do I still need topsoil?
Not always. If the field soil was left in place it may be fine with some loosening. If grading stripped it, we add topsoil before seeding.
How do you schedule seeding around secondary water turns?
We pick a date when your secondary system is running and set up a watering plan you can keep for the first few weeks.
Can you fix a sunken trench line across my lawn?
Yes. We fill and compact the low strip, top it with soil and hydroseed it to match the rest of the yard.
Is late summer too hot to seed in Riverton?
Late August into September usually works once the worst heat breaks. Midsummer is possible but needs heavier mulch and steady watering.
