Renewing Millcreek Lawns
Hydroseeding in Millcreek is mostly renewal work. The area stayed rural until after World War II, filled in with suburban homes, and was mostly built out by the 1980s. That means many yards have grass that is 40 to 70 years old, worn by kids, dogs, tree roots and decades of uneven watering. Hydroseeding is an affordable way to bring those lawns back without laying sod over everything.
A young city with old yards
Millcreek only incorporated on December 28, 2016, after a failed 2012 vote and a successful one in 2015. It has about 63,380 residents and four community councils: Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek and Mount Olympus. Each area has its own mix of ranch homes, split-levels and newer infill, and the yards vary just as much.
Infill and rebuilds
When an older home is torn down and replaced, the new house usually covers more of the lot and the yard gets graded, trenched and packed by equipment. We loosen that compaction, correct the slope so rain drains off the new foundation, and then hydroseed. A rebuilt yard seeded in spring is usually ready for light use by early summer if it is watered well.
The canyon to the east
Undeveloped Mill Creek Canyon lies just east of the populated area, inside the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Homes near the Mount Olympus and East Mill Creek side sit on rising ground closer to the mountains. On those sloped lots, we use a tackified hydromulch and, on steeper banks, an erosion control blanket so seed is not washed toward the street.
Big seasonal swings
Millcreek has a humid continental climate with warm to hot summers and cold, sometimes severe winters. Seed sprayed too late in fall may not root before the ground freezes. We aim for September or early October in fall, and April or May in spring.

Millcreek Questions
Is hydroseeding a good way to renew an old Millcreek lawn?
Often, yes. If the grade is reasonable, we can loosen the surface and hydroseed a fresh stand for less than sodding the whole yard.
We are rebuilding on our lot. When should the lawn go in?
After final grading and utility work are done. We fix compaction from equipment, set the grade and then seed.
How late in fall can you seed in Millcreek?
We aim for September or early October so the grass roots in before the ground freezes.
My lot slopes toward the street on the east side. Will seed wash off?
We use a tackified hydromulch and blankets on steeper banks to keep seed in place.
