Seeding Murray's Creek and River Ground
Hydroseeding in Murray takes place in a city where water gathers. The ground slopes gently west from the Wasatch toward the Jordan River, the largest water feature in town, and both Big Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood creeks join the river inside city limits. Significant wetlands adjoin the river and the two creeks. Work near those channels needs careful sediment control, and lawns on the low side of town need grading that keeps water moving.
Bottom land and bench land
Pioneers found that the low bottom lands along Murray's creeks had plenty of grass and were easy to irrigate, while the higher bench land was covered in sagebrush and grew little grass. That pattern still shows. Lower lots often have better soil but wetter conditions; bench lots tend to need more topsoil and organic matter before a hydroseed lawn will thrive.
Dry late summer
Murray averages about 15.74 inches of precipitation, with April and May the wettest at 2.18 and 2.31 inches, and June through August all under an inch. Spring seeding takes advantage of that moisture. For summer jobs we plan heavier mulch and a firm watering schedule.
Liquefaction and fill
The Utah Geological Survey places most of Murray in high or moderate liquefaction zones. That does not change how grass grows, but it does mean we avoid stacking heavy fill on soft ground and we keep drainage moving away from foundations during yard grading.
The old smelter district
Murray's first smelter went up in 1870, ASARCO formed here in 1899, and the smelters were imploded in 2000. Lawsuits over lead dust are part of that history. On older parcels near the former smelter area, we suggest a soil test before you plant food gardens; for lawns, we bring in clean topsoil where the existing surface is questionable.

Murray Water and Soil Notes
- Creek confluences. Big Cottonwood Creek and Little Cottonwood Creek both join the Jordan River within Murray's boundaries.
- Gentle west slope. Murray's topography slopes gently westward from the Wasatch Range toward the Jordan River.
- Bench vs bottom. Pioneers found abundant grass on the creek bottoms, while the higher bench lands were covered with sagebrush.
- Liquefaction zones. The Utah Geological Survey places most of Murray in high or moderate liquefaction zones.

Murray Questions
My Murray lot is near the river. Do I need silt fence?
If you are grading near the river, a creek or the adjoining wetlands, sediment control is smart and may be required. We install silt fence before digging starts.
Why does my bench lot grow worse grass than my friend's near the creek?
Bench soils here were historically sagebrush ground with less organic matter. Topsoil or compost before seeding makes a real difference.
Should I test soil near the old smelter area?
For food gardens, a soil test is a good idea. For lawns, we can bring in clean topsoil if the surface is doubtful.
What month is best for seeding in Murray?
April and May are the wettest months, so spring seeding gets the most help from the weather.
